TheDFIspecificationdefinesaninterfaceprotocolbetweenmemorycontrollerlogicandPHYinterfaces,withagoalofreducingintegrationcostswhileenablingperformanceanddatathroughputefficiency.Theprotocoldefinesthesignals,timing,andfunctionalityrequiredforefficientcommunicationacrosstheinterface.ThespecificationisdesignedtobeusedbydevelopersofbothmemorycontrollersandPHYdesigns,butdoesnotplaceanyrestrictionsonthehowthememorycontrollerinterfacestothesystemdesign,orhowthePHYinterfacestothememorydevices.
